Delegates of the Kazan OC

Next the progress report of the 2013 Universiade in Kazan (RUS) followed. SU Director Marc Vandenplas gave an update of the situation. Vladimir Leonov of the Organizing Committee presented its progress report. The Kazan infrastructure is undergoing extensive changes with the street-road network being renovated, new hotels being built and opened. The construction of the Kazan-Airport intermodal railway line has been started as well. On of the priorities of the Kazan OC is the training of volunteers for the 2013 SU. The volunteer team currently counts 2,000 members. By now 25 sport venues have been launched and 5 facilities are under construction (Aquatics Palace, Football Stadium, Rowing Centre, Gymnastics Centre and Shooting Centre). The Saint Petersburg Volleyball Centre has been put in operation. In the Universiade Village, the third cluster is under construction as well. Wrestling was also added to the sports program of the Kazan Universiade bringing the number of sports to 26. The proposed dates for the Games, July 6th to 17th, were accepted by the FISU EC. At the end of his presentation a promotional video was shown regarding the preparations in Kazan.

Delegates of the Granada OC

Next was the update of the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain. Much progress has been made, although the preparations were under strain for some months due to the local elections. Fortunately, all political parties held the Winter Universiade project outside the election battles. The engagement of the National Sports Council to fund the event has been maintained. The planned construction for the permanent twin ice rinks is advancing and construction will commence in January 2012. The success of the local ice hockey club – 2nd place in the Spanish 2nd Division - will speed things up as the club needs the new venue. Also the Curling pavilion has been put out to tender. In the Sierra Nevada, where the snow facilities are located, the FIS track homologation of the new alpine slope is in process. A half pipe will be built next summer and a Master Plan will be set up to be presented at the next FISU EC meeting in August.

Delegates of the Gwangju OC

After the coffee break, the floor was given to the delegates of the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, Korea. GUOC has completed the formation of the Action Plan detailing the basic plan on the overall 21 sectors. Based on the plan, GUOC is systematically putting in action detailed implementation procedures on not only the sporting events but on non-sporting events as well. GUOC will establish the basic plan for cultural events as part of its efforts to cultivate cultural activities unique to Gwangju that will leave a memorable impression on the participants of the 2015 SU. Expansion of accessible roads leading to the main stadium and the Athletes’ Village are planned as well as renovation of the surrounding roads. A new media centre is foreseen and will be built by making maximum use of existing facilities as part of the city regeneration project, along with the Athletes’ Village and the main venues. A community sports centre, which is situated in the vicinity of the major facilities of the Gwangju SU, will be remodelled as part of the facilities construction. GUOC is in the process of developing a FISU Legacy Program to improve the brand value of the Universiade and the host city of Gwangju. Through cooperation with FISU, GUOC will not only enhance the educational value of sports but also develop diverse projects meeting international standards that will contribute to the development of mankind and leave behind a great legacy in the history of the Universiade. ‘Unifriends’, comprised of 30 university student honorary ambassadors who were selected early 2011, will play a pivotal role in building a network among the universities. GUOC will implement plans that will attract the interest and participation of university students worldwide through the operation of Social Networking Service (SNS), a new channel of communication, as well as online supporters for foreign students studying in Korea. GUOC also strives to secure and foster volunteers in advance. The English School Program, which GUOC ran successfully in 2010, is continued in 2011 by introducing more foreign languages. GUOC has built the ‘Universiade Cyber Foreign Language School’, a new educational system offering 14 foreign language education contents free of charge, thus enabling learners to gain the opportunity to study who had been hesitant as a result of constraints in time and distance.
